Earth Day 04.22.09

The Bolsa Chica Land Trust seeks funds for a massive single-day donation to help preserve and restore the Bolsa Chica this Earth Day, 04-22-09. This will be the largest single-day donation to help save and restore a depleted ecosystem in U.S. history. 95% of the coastal wetlands in California have been destroyed by development. Maybe we cannot undo all the injustices we have done to this earth, but we can begin here in our community. We can show others as well that they, too, have the power to help preserve, restore, and maintain our earth.

We are asking 100,000 people to donate $50.00 or more on April 22 to reach a goal of five million dollars in one day. Achieving this goal will help us further restore this salt marsh ecosystem and fund the Bolsa Chica Project. It will launch us on the path towards funding the complete restoration and protection of the Bolsa Chica, which has been estimated at 50 million dollars.

While this may seem impossible, we have done the impossible before. When the Bolsa Chica Land Trust was formed in 1992, we were told we could not save the Bolsa Chica from 4,884 houses and a 4-lane highway across the wetlands, with 900 houses on the wetlands themselves, but we did it! Although this current goal may seem equally impossible, we are fully committed to preserving and restoring the entire 1,700 acre Bolsa Chica.

The work at Bolsa Chica is not over! More wetlands are threatened, archaeological sites are in peril, and if the land is not restored, life cannot be sustained.

We are encouraging you to join with us and get involved-- make a video, make a poster, tell your friends, what ever it takes. We must take ownership because it belongs to us all.

The video is misleading.

Fact:The largest restoration west of the Mississippi was completed in 2006.

500+ acres were restored using mitigation money from the Long Beach and LA Ports to the tune of $150M+, linking the Bolsa Chica wetlands to the ocean.

Fact:The Amigos de Bolsa Chica led the fight to save the Bolsa Chica Wetlands.

There are lots of great organizations that have helped protect the Bolsa Chica. I won't deny Amigos have done some great work so has the Land Trust. That is not the point here... We are all working for the same goal to help preserve RESTORE the wetlands. This is an intro video our objectives will be more clear in the future and our past success but I can assure you were not taking anyones glory.

Thank your efforts. I have always been alocal and have seen every change that went on as a trail hiker and cyclist early mornings. I had many opportunities to also see a great restorative effort. So many are joining in a more assertive environmental effort. how many of us loved to rise early with the bird and watch the sun rise. What a bearutiful area Bolsa Chica needs to stay.

I live right next to Bolsa, Huntington, Seal, and Sunset and whenever I go to the beach I always see the wetlands, its really quite beautiful. I hope it can be preserved for years to come.
