Lilliputian is a reference to the people of Lilliput from Gulliver's Travels. The Lilliputians were small, fitting quite well in your hand. In other words, Lilliputian means small.

My mum still has her copies of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings from the '70s too, UK printings of course, though they're all held together by tape. And lilliputian means a small person...
