HUGHES (BEN) HUDNALL Ben Hudnall, 68, one of the Bay Area's most innovative, tenacious and highly respected labor leaders, died peacefully in his Berkeley home on Monday, June 12, 2006, following a three-month battle with lung cancer. For thirty-eight years, Ben helped build the current Engineers & Scientists of CA, IFPTE Local 20, AFL-CIO & CLC and mentored a generation of union activists. He was instru-mental in forging innovative, cooperative partnerships between labor and management for both the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions and PG&E. Honored in 1983 as Unionist of the Year by the Central Labor Council of Alameda County, for decades you could find Ben on the picket line, with his cap and his pipe. While a dogged activist, Ben's wit, wisdom and shrewd diplomacy also made him an effective force at the bargaining table, providing support and encouragement while inspiring his colleagues with his unflinching determination to bring about justice for workers. Ben is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, artist Michele Manning. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 10, from 2 - 6 p.m. at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, SF. Details can be found on the websites www.IFPTE20.org or www.supportcircle.com. His request is for donations to go to The Nation publication.
Even in your absence, you continue to be a daily inspiration to me. From the day I was born, you shared with me your unconditional love, passionate support for the underdog, and informed perspective on world affairs. I miss you, Ben!
