First this was a Savonius model. It wasn't that effective so I changed it to this...
By placing the blades at the edge in the right angle and keeping it hollow in the center, the wind will be bend to the center. The wind that blows through it collides with the bended wind and comes against another blade. This is one of the things this makes it more efficient.
I'm charging an 12V car cell with it and works well!

  • 3kv. @ what (minuman) wind speed?

  • @acklan3 I wish! I think it woul be around 9999rpm to get that kind of voltage.

I managed to get 150volts out of it @ 4bft but with no load, so no amps.

  • does it still work in the rain with any shorts or problems?

  • @Mrinfoone Yeah it still works, although rust is building up, so I wonder for how long this will last.

In the mean time I'm building a 'Dual Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Alternator' which will replace the ceilingfan within a month or two.

That would be the moment to get some dimensions of the VAWT so I can answer other questions.

  • @Mrinfoone No Shorts, but the connections are a little rusty. But I'm making a new 3-fase generator for this one. I think it will be ready in early spring.

  • Nice job But why dont you go to a heating or air handling company or even a scrap yard and pick up a Used large squirrel cage fan. Its already balanced and has a shaft and bearing already attached (and bearing housings). might even still have a pulley on the end of the shaft. They already worked out the best design years ago. they use them on apartment buildings and factories for roof exhaust fans. Again nice work. :)

  • @jimdennett True, but I wanted to build a windturbine with the stuff I already had and intended to use the design of the exhaust fan you are talking about. I noticed lots of differences in test output with different angles of the blades. (I use an old fan for testing inside my house)

If the angle is to narrow, the VAWT won't start by itself. If the angle is to wide, the same problem occurs.

But I will keep this in mind, should save me a lot of time. Thanks!

  • cool

  • and just think if everybody in the world had like 30 of these on there house how much you could save/be less dependent on a non-replaceable energy source

  • Anyone can build a VAWT, but recycling is the greater challenge!
