yes, silk flowers work well. For the base buy green styrofoam balls instead of floral foam. I suggest cutting stems off or to just under the base of the flower and hot gluing blossoms to the ball.
Tip: If you would like to hang the ball simply attach ribbon with a u shaped floral pin, push firmly into styrofoam.

Yes, it would be lovely for a formal event. Bright pink roses or creme roses would look great as well.
