    Thujone was thought to be the psychoactive chemical which is found in wormwood, one of absinthe's ingredients. However it is a GABA antagonist meaning it can cause muscle spasm in large doses which is why the concentration is regulated but there is no evidence that it is hallucinogenic. The hallucinations reported many years ago that caused the banning of absinthe in many countries was likely due to poisonous adulterants added to it.
