Let me take a minute to answer that for you. The purpose was not to hide it from others but not to do it so others could see, with a family around there's only so many places you can be alone, the scripture is pointing out that they wanted to be seen to look like there pious. Share with your family what fasting means to you and when you are they will understand. Hopefully this is some help

Fasting without prayer-is only dieting. IT is powerful!....You see and feel things differently. All my favorite foods show up somewhere when I fast! I've been able to resist. (I sleep walked and ate a doughnut the first week- I don't remember it at all(Dr wanted me to take a sleeping med at night/BP meds in the am...I checked w/dr. My head is so clear- when I fast-Don't spend a lot of time "beating yourself up" if you "mess up" get right back to it-put the slip up behind you.

My main question in relations to beginning my spiritual fast (21 days) is as follows. The use of technology during my fast? I uderstand that the fast is to help increase my communication with my Lord but am I to exclude all use of technology besides what I am needed for work. I appreciate the clarification.

I have a question about fasting. How can I keep fasting secret if I'm living with my wife and my kids? They will see, that I'm not eating. What should I tell them?
(Please read fully from the 4th 1 down here)
So, the heart is the issue. Fasting is never a work that corners God into doing what we want. Neither is it to be used to convince God I'm serious. It's a biblical weapon to use to humble our flesh, put it to death before God & be more attentive to His word than when we're eating. The Holy Spirit can often get our attention much more readily when we're fasting. Keep a loving humble heart with fasting & God will bless you openly! I hope that helps!

I typically tell no one else. I'm not ridiculous with it. At times when pressed, say at work when there's a luncheon, I switch days so as not to draw attention. Remember, I teach a lifestyle of prayer & fasting. God's taught us to be ready for battle at any notice, so switching the fast day(s) to keep it silent doesn't diminish the value of the fasting because I'm fasting regularly already. (to be cont'd)

Hair combed, shaven if you shave, not griping about being so hungry because I'm fasting. My wife is my partner in this walk of faith. She's well aware out of consideration for her work as having to cook meals. My kids know because they see, not because I've made it a point to tell them. All my family fasts together on Tuesdays. I'm teaching them the bible on fasting with all the other truths I & my wife teach them. (to be cont'd)

It's come out with the words/body language that they're really wanting everyone to know that's what they're doing. With that attitude, their prayer doesn't get past the ceiling because they're desiring folks to think of them as spiritual or have pity on them (hence the forlorn face as well). Jesus admonishes us to "annoint" our head, wash our faces, etc. In today's thought, that means to look as you always do.

Great question. This is no doubt in response to Jesus command in Matt. 6:16-18 about fasting. This is in context with several commands of Jesus revealing man's heart. The law addressed the outward actions of the Jews but Jesus takes it a step farther & addresses the heart. I've known people who constantly get in the conversations they've had with certain people of prominence that they've been fasting & praying for such and such. (to be cont'd)
