Home of the Gardening Gourmets - watch our TV pilot called the Garden Gourmets (google: senga lindsay garden gourmets) and tell us what you think!

Today was the day to open our bee hives on our edible green roof and check to see how the hives are progressing and to check the results of the varroa mite on my strong hive. Last winter I noted quite a few bees and pupae were being tossed out of the hive due to deformed wing virus. High varroa mite count are an indictor that the hive has been inundated by a large population of mites - despite the fact that I used mite control strips on them going into the winter. (See my vlog) Last week (see my vlog) using a white board sprayed with Pam (the cooking oil) I placed the board at the bottom of the hive along with a Checkmite Strip placed in the middle of bee cluster and left in all for a few days. This will knock off some of the mites from the bees and they will fall onto the board and become trapped in the oil. From there I can do a mite count to see how much infestation I have.

Watch my vlog to see what I found and what I did as a result.
