The Humane Society of the United States is conceding defeat on State Issue 2, but the organization's president says he'll be back to fight another battle in Ohio.
Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive officer of the Humane Society, said in an interview that he knew the Issue 2 battle couldn't be won which is why the organization didn't spend any money opposing it.
We just needed to see this issue resolved before we launch reform efforts in Ohio to phase out the confinement of animals on factory farms, he said. We havent made the final decision to do that, but its very likely.
Issue 2, which is passing by a nearly two-to-one margin, will establish a 13-member board which will have autonomous authority to pass and enforce rules regarding raising of livestock and poultry.
Please don't let's get hung up on peripheral issues. Laikynsmim didn't say anything about "all" farmers, but just those who oppose a humane treatment of animals.
Now, the real issue: where to draw the line between humane and abusive treatment. Let's get that hammered out so as many people as possible can get on board and get something useful passed by 2010.

A huge majority of farmers do NOT consider the animals they care for as stupid. Now I am not protecting those who do abuse animals. Those people deserve to be prosecuted and driven out of business. For you to assume that all farmers think of their animals as stupid is not only ignorant, but also a dangerous accusation.

I just hope the people get more educated to what they are voting on in 2010 better than this year! I fear the reason issue 2 passed is because the everyday person was ignorant to what was at stake. They actually thought local farmers and animal rights were for this :-( I educated as many as I could, but the t.v. adds were the dominating factor in the most votes. Unfortunately
