A short Bible study pertaining to an issue that appears to have confused a lot of today's Christians in reference to their lifestyle. Does God require our obedience in this time of His abundant grace, or does He not?

  • Read REVELATION 22:14 "Blessed are they that do..." what? that they may what?

...when Jesus comes, those who are ready are like Jesus (1 John 3:2), and the door is shut (Rev. 22:11): then anyone weighed in the balances (Daniel 5:27) and wanting oil (Matthew 25:8) will be shut out forever, and cast into outer darkness (Matthew 22:13)...Once forever disproving the so-called "once-saved-always-saved" babylonian doctrine.

  • @TreasuresOfTheLORD God has always been all about His people obeying Him above all else; "to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams" (1 Samuel 15:22).

Intentional disobedience undid mankind for all ages, thanks to Eve and then Adam, and the obedience of the SECOND Adam, Jesus Christ, has paved the way for our getting right with God once again.

    Amen!

Notice also the term "blotting out" in verse 14. God's Law was written on two tables of stone (Exodus 24:12; 31:18; 34:1, 4; Deuteronomy 4:13; 5:22; 9:9-11) whereas Moses' Law was written in a book (Exodus 24:4; Deuteronomy 31:9, 24). So... how can it possibly refer to the former!?

Also, those tables were engraved, but Col. 2:14 says 'handwriting'.

Also, they were 'against' us whereas the Sabbath, having come before sin could never be against us! James 1:25; 2:12 liberty.

  • @TreasuresOfTheLORD I wasn't aware of the two different words myself, but the context of Col. 2:14-17 certainly steers one away from the weekly Sabbath as presented in the Ten Commandments, and toward the annual observances instead!

  • @CosmicGrounds

The Sabbath in God's Law comes from the Hebrew word Shabbath {shab-bawth - Strong's # 7676} whereas the feastday sabbaths (such as mentioned in Colossians 2:14-16) come from the Hebrew word Shabbathown {shab-baw-thone - Strong's #7677}.

Examples of the former include Ex 20:8-11; Lev 23:3, 38 and Deut 5:12-15. Examples of the latter include Lev 16:31; 23:24, 39; Eph 2:13-15 and Col2:14-17.

Two different words are used here and no-one seems to have picked up on this!

  • @CosmicGrounds

    6. It specifically mentions "meat, drink, holy days and new moons". However: if you look in the Ten Commandments: nowhere do we see "meat, drink, holy days or new moons mentioned at all." However, these terms are used quite often when speaking of annual featsdays. That's why is says sabbath DAYS (plural!) not THE Sabbath DAY (singular!)

    7. The word used here for 'sabbath' is a different word than used for that in God's Ten Commandments...

  • @CosmicGrounds

    4. "Against us" ...the Sabbath was established before sin - when all was perfect, therefore it can in no way, shape or form be considered 'against us'. However: if you had to sacrifice a lamb everytime you sinned, if you had to travel to Jerusalem 3x/year; would this not be considered "against you"?!

    5. The Sabbath is not a shadow of Christ. It points to Creation (Ex. 20:11) and we also keep it because of our Redemption (Deut. 5:12) AND NT Israel (us) are supposed to keep it!

  • @CosmicGrounds

Colossians 2:14-17 cannot possibly be speaking of the weekly 7th Day Sabbath of the the LORD thy God.

    1. "Blotting out" - God's Law was written on tables of stone whereas Moses' Law written in a book.

    2. "Handwriting" - ditto

    3. "Ordinances" - the feastdays were odinances; the Sabbath is a Commandment

    4. "Against us" - God's Law is called the Law of liberty (James 1:25; 2:12) and the Sabbath was established before sin - when all was perfect, therefore it can in no way, shape

  • @TreasuresOfTheLORD And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. - Colossians 2: 15

  • @TreasuresOfTheLORD Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. - Galatians 3: 13 -14

  • @TreasuresOfTheLORD For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. - Galatians 3:10 - 12

  • @TreasuresOfTheLORD "And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect." - Galatians 3:17
