Field of View in games

This is a demonstration of some of the effects of FOV in HaloPC. Game developers have been screwing with the FOV big time for nearly a decade now, I am here to protest against this. Most people (I think) dont notice or dont care about this issue, but I know there are still many people who prefer a wide FOV over anything. I want this video to present the opinion and case of this minority(?), and at the same time make more people aware of this subject.

Aside from making the game feel more fast paced, wider FOV actually makes aiming feel much more smoother and easier too. This I cant demonstrate in the video obviously, so you'd have to test it out yourself.

Mainly directed at 343 industries as it would seem they are willing to listen to their fans when updating their games. My idea is to include a FOV slider setting in the Reach title update. This change would most likely be very easy to implement, just adjusting 1 parameter, so this wouldn't interfere much with the work being done on more 'crucial' fixes.

At the least this would be a very welcome change in the HaloCEA(Reach) multiplayer. (Or just give us the original with xbox live support... not gonna happen I know, so 343i should concentrate on making CEA MP as much like the original as possible.)

Yes you can do this in Halo2 pc too, I don't remember what the program was but it shouldn't be too hard to find it with google...

Yes I understand how it could be considered cheating, and that's sort of the point of the vid. If everyone would be able to change the FOV as they please, would you still see it as cheating? As for you not understanding why do this, well, it I guess it just comes down to a personal preference. The narrow FOV makes me feel like a horse with blinders (or w/e they're called), like tunnel vision.

I feel like 90 FOV is perfect for any type of fps. Its just enough. Wish there was a FOV on console. Itd sure make the game more fun.

When you sit closer to the screen, like with a PC monitor, more of you actual "IRL" field of view is spent on your monitor. That's why a wider FOV feels more natural when closer to the monitor. This is why console games have a narrow FOV; you sit far away from the TV.

I think you're thinking about this the wrong way. Viewing a game at a low FOV while close to the screen is not only an unnatural sight, but it's UNHEALTHY.

The Reach FOV is actually 78 degrees, which is honestly a fair FOV for console games. Most the time console shooters make the FOV narrow so that they can get away with better graphics, because the more narrow the FOV the less the game has to render.
