Lecture held at the Darwin bicentenary IUBS BioEd 09 conference in Christchurch, New Zealand on February 14, 2009.
This part describes the core of the Darwin/Wallace theory as competition, which ultimately drives species apart and causes them to multiply, and the Modern Synthesis which supplies the proximate mechanisms. School students can be introduced to the concept of the gene pool, which will enable them to understand what it means when a new species arises.
