High mobility of grain boundaries can be seen in this experiment performed near the melting point. This experiment also shows reversal of shear-sense, obtained by reversing the drive motor. Microstructures do not seem to have a good memory of older shear-sense.
This is one of 15 time-lapse movies linked to this page (http://www.albany.edu/geosciences/wdm/wdmoviep.html), which show the experimental deformation or post-deformation behaviour of octachloropropane (C3Cl8).
Most of the experiments in this group were performed during December 1995, when JHR was visiting Albany. Feel free to download these movies for teaching.
