The first opening seconds remind me a lot of Nightwish's "Dead to the world"

(which according to some of you is a mortal sin, but imo there has to be comparison, cuz there is no one way or best way of doing things)

It means that often, when someone you know falls apart or hits a bump in their life, you can only watch. You can't truly understand it, and there's no way to really relate to them. Because you haven't gone through it.
