Architect Russell Acton shows off the complex wooden truss interior of the Salt Building in Vancouver B.C. When completed, this will be a "chill space" for the use of athletes during the 2010 Winter Olympics. After the games, the building will become a community space for residents of the Southeast False Creek Sustainability District. This was originally a salt processing plant; salt would come off ships anchored in False Creek and work its way through a series of refining and processing steps inside this building, and be shipped out the other side into waiting rail cars.Though the building is more than a century old, its owner, the City of Vancouver, is expected to meet LEED Gold certification, a requirement of all new city buildings -- even "old" ones.
It will be a community center for the more than 600 residential units surrounding it. I believe there will be a cafe in there plus a few other services.
