Having emerged from a bloody 10-year civil war which ravaged the country, Sierra Leone is struggling to reconstruct its infrastructure, its economy and the lives of its people. One of the poorest nations in the world, it ranks 2nd lowest on the UN's Human Development Index (2005), and by the end of the conflict, 50,000 people had died, half the population had been displaced and tens of thousands of children had been orphaned.
At the height of the war, Hope and Homes worked with a local organisations to provide shelter and care for the children who had been orphaned, and in the years since it ended, our programmes have concentrated on providing for the emergency needs of children and families in a post-war society. In 2006 we restructured our programme to meet the changing needs of the children and communities we support and to focus our resources on making long term sustainable change for vulnerable children.
Wellington is aiming to raise at least £150,000 in Wellington's 150th anniversary year. Help us get there - donate towards this appeal via http://www.wellingtoncollege.org.uk/page.aspx?id=7948
