Ruby and Tala are two red wolves living at Wolf Haven International as part of the red wolf Species Survival Plan. This video shows examples of different kinds of wolf behavior- - both play and agonistic (aggressive) play.

Ruby, the smaller, darker red wolf, is ALL play. Watch as she exhibits these behaviors:
• Digs
• Bounces off tree
• "Rocking horse" movement when she runs
• Play bows, breaks eye contact and runs around.

Tala, on the other hand, is demonstrating play, but of a more agonistic nature.
• Stiff posture
• Charges
• Never breaks eye contact
• Every time Tala pounces, he looks directly at the camera.

There is some degree of play in Tala's behavior, but it's play with an edge. Can you see the difference?

Many times, bows are play-related, but it can mean other things. Basically, a bow is just a "ready" stance. Studies show that wolves will bow at bison- but they're not playing with the bison, they are getting ready to react to them.
