On May 20, 2011, Levees.org and Irvin Mayfield Jr presented a gift to the people of Gentilly. Together they held an Unveiling Ceremony of a Louisiana State Historic Plaque near ground zero of the London Avenue Canal breach site (east side). Though the plaque is a gift, the text was crafted and the location chosen with input from the affected neighborhood leaders and residents.

Still so sad years later. My family is still waiting for a grant to raise their home so they can get back their lives.

A beautiful way to remember what was needlessly lost. A constant reminder to remain vigilant so it doesn't happen again.

These plaques will be a long term reminder to residents and visitors of the tragedy visited on New Orleans by the people responsible for the city's safety. The Corp of Engineers failed the people, and continues to deny responsibility for it failures. This plaque serves as a reminder to everyone.

It is sad to say in this day and age when the American Government subsudizes so many foreign countries that they havent taken care of the people devastated by this man made tragedy. 5 years + later and private individuals are having to contribute for this plaque. Tthere are many in the feds and ACOE that wish folks who want the TRUTH would just go away. But the media persist in telling untruths and still will not focus on the fact that 80% of the damages were done when the levees breached.

I wish I had been able to attend this unveiling. Friends lived in this community. Fortunately they are still friends but no longer live there. Such a terrible uprooting of history and family!
