It is a demunitive of first name i.e Mirko; so his son will take Mirkovic as surname. And purpose of it is to differ Croats and Serbs, since most of Croats (Dalmatia, Slavonia) were Serbs back ago but they convert to catholicism under Branimir (Serbian Branislav)
