This is an update on the status of the Iceland volcano, as of Monday, April 19, 2010.

This image, acquired on 15 April 2010 by Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), shows the vast cloud of volcanic ash sweeping across the UK from the eruption in Iceland, more than 1000 km away. The ash, which can be seen as the large grey streak in the image, is drifting from west to east at a height of about 11 km above the surface Earth. Courtesy of the European Space Agency.

  • It's my understanding that England plans on suing Iceland for losses accrued to do their volcano.

  • @MikeHornett Everyone seems intent on suing everyone else. The airlines may sue Eurocontrol for shutting down airspace due to the volcano. Travel companies who lost business are ready to sue their governments. It's amazing.

  • Thanks. Actually you have been the only source of info about this for me. Hope for better news though.

  • @anariaq There's a new ash cloud that is approaching the UK on Tuesday. Only Aberdeen and Edinburgh in Scotland are open. The goal in Europe is 50% flights operating, in areas where the ash cloud is less. Sounds like this will continue for a long time.

  • @HiAdrian It's true! Between the new 2.5 Smoke Simulator and the emitter particle systems you can do a pretty good simulation of The Volcano Whose Name I Cannot Pronounce.

  • @irakrakow I am a subscriber, this is why I received this update. You could be unlucky with making daily updates, if the big volcano next to the smaller, now spitting one explodes, like it did in the past! :)

  • @irakrakow Hmm not good. Thats why good old piston engine prop drivin airplanes has a edge. Just change the filter little more often. And if the propeller needs some sanding and waxing. Hehe this can make it easier ;)

  • @granvillethegardener Absolutely. This shows how interconnected we all are. There's a saying that a butterfly flapping its wings in New York affects the weather in Hong Kong. I think we should go back to a simpler time when we were more self-reliant.

  • @Xraller This will eventually turn into a series on Blender particle systems, you'll see ;)

  • This just goes to show how powerful nature is and how easily our modern lifestyles can be thrown into chaos. Here in the UK all air travel has been suspended although flying restrictions for the north of England where I live are to be lifted from tomorrow, but it will takes days from there for normal service to be resumed. Thanks for the Blender tutorials and this.

PS Some of the Blender generated explosions are difficult to differentiate from the real thing(on screen that is)!
