Actually, in the official book that was written about the show, the producers said that they thought of Hanschen as more of a predator than anything who takes advantage of Ernst than drifts away from him not sure how he feels about having a homosexual experience. And, of course, Ernst is all to easy to take advantage of with his vulnerabilities and romantic outlook on life.
