After the Civil War, Turner Prince, a carpenter by trade, found refuge with other freed slaves at the Union Army Camp on the Tar River Flood Plain in Edgecombe County, in North Carolina. In 1865, Mr. Prince built Shanties and Huts and as the population grew in 1885 the City was the First African American Independently Governed Community in United States History. Initially the city was called Freedom Hill but in 1885 when the city became incorporated it was named Princeville, North Carolina after Turner Prince its founder.
