This is the first movie of the Byzantine commonwealth series (which would include movies about Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Armenia and Greece)
The Russian Empire - Руска империя - shared a complex relationship with the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire, but mainly the Russian realm shared the same cultural heritage of Byzantium and orthodox faith.
This video covers the first contacts between the Varangian Russ (Rhos) and the Roman Empire. This contact which was based upon trade, war and the Orthodox faith. The trade connected between Constantinople and The Russian mainland. It was carried through the rivers of western Dvina and the Volkhov at the north, and continued through the Dneiper. This rout was a naval way which kept live communication way between the Baltic sea and the black and Mediterranean seas. This rout together with the Constantinople - Belgrade highway, Via Egnatia (from Heraclea to Dyrrachium_ Durazzo)and Thessalonica Naissus( Niš) Connected The Byzantine Empire with Bulgaria, Serbia and Russian realms with religious and cultural bonds which survived until this day.




This video is based upon the book of "The Byzantine Commonwealth, Eastern Europe 500 - 1453", written by the Russian scholar, prof. Dimitri Obolensky.
