Dr. Rabinowitz, M.D., M.P.H., Associate Professor at the Yale School of Medicine, explores some of the reasons why the One Health approach still struggles to gain traction among human physicians and environmental health experts in spite of acquiring legitimacy in veterinary circles. In overcoming some of these barriers and moving toward greater collaboration, he explains the benefits of using animals as sentinels for many human health issues and stresses the importance of greater research focus on health problems that affect animal care workers. He concludes by highlighting NIpah virus as a vivid example of a disease outbreak that required a One Health approach to fully understand the complex set of epidemiological, ecological, and socio-economic factors that led to its emergence.
