Here's a test run of veneering a couple strips of walnut veneer. It's a prelude to re-veneering that Philco 49-1040 with some nice, new mahogany. It actually turned out quite nicely. Here are the steps I used:

1. Cut clean edges using a utility knife and straight edge.
2. Create a sandwich of veneer strips and 2x4s. Clamp tightly.
3. Use a small block plane to square up the edges. Essentially, a primitive joiner.
4. Layout the strips in the desired pattern the pin in place.
5. Tape the veneer pieces together face side up and remove the pins.
6. Glue up the veneer and board
7. Clamp together very, very tightly and allow to dry
8. Remove the clamps and tape carefully
9. Cleanup and glue residue, trim the edges, sand and finish.

  • Hi Sarah,

I'm using some 6" X 6" squares on burled walnut on another project and it's very wavy (see Philco 15DX restoration pt1).

You can flatten it out using "veneer softener". Google that and you'll find lots homemade and commercial solutions.

Basically, it's a liquid you dampen the veneer with and it becomes flexable. Then you put some weight on it (phone books) for a while to flatten it out.

I haven't tried it yet myself, but I will be so stay tuned.

  • Hi.. nice and simple..great! I've never done any veneering before and have some burr walnut, which is not very flat. Do you reckon I could use this simple method on such un flat veneer? I's just for a small book cover, so there's no joins. Cheers, Sarah
