As an African, I got the "are you on a scholarship?" a LOT when I was studying at an American school. For the longest time, I didn't get why...it finally clicked that as Africa is supposed to be the land of poverty, not a SINGLE person is supposed to be able to afford US tuition. SMH

Thanks April. I don't think that it was so much degrading or seeing something wrong with scholarships. I think it was more the assumption that I HAD to be on one because I was African, and couldn't possibly afford my education. (PS: I would have loved to be on a full scholarship though - cause international student fees are expensive! and screw their assumptions!)

Don't understand why scholarships are bad tho? I have tons of scholarships based on my academic standing +community service etc like many other Africans and Asians in my school. What's wrong with going to university without paying a cent because of your intelligence and diligence to apply for many scholarships out there. All those people that tried to degrade you are just jealous losers that wished they could get academic scholarships!

I agree. However, they don't seem to understand that "majority" and "all" are not the same. And it manifests in everything from the news to charity to perceptions. And that is ultimately detrimental for Africans - for example, if trade is encouraged instead of aid there would definitely be less poverty. But you can't envision trade when you think that there is no middle class; that everyone is poor and miserable. Furthermore, the vast majority of Africans in US schools are NOT on scholarships.

I am African too. Lets be real though, The fact that you can afford to pay for your own tuition in America makes you one of the lucky few (relative to the vast majority)...thats just the reality.

I live in Australia so this is my life everyday lol. but its usually just curiosity and not from a bad place. U just gotta brush it off and realise just because its is obvious to "us" its not so obvious to "them". U are probably the first black person they have really spoken to or associated with. I think sometimes as black people we need to not be so overly sensitive.
