Ben Ali did good things- he protected womens rights, improved the education system (over 1/3 of people went to college and thats pretty good for a afr./ ME country.) and he stamped out islamic fundamentalism. it was seen to foreigners as much more liberal, more women without shawls, etc. Becaus tunisia=no oil, he improved tourism as economy and soon the econ of tunis. was growin 5% a year.
