The Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) colony of Atka Bay, near the German Antarctic station of Neumayer, is one of the about 35 known colonies of this charismatic species. Our visit coincided with the first chicks loosing their down feathers to get ready for their departure to the open sea one month later.
