Yeah, yeah, I've heard all this stuff about Lemonheads going down after the split between Evan and Ben. It's usually said by some punk kids who refuse to believe that bands can actually improve once they become less punk. And these kids almost always, if pressed, admit that they barely listened to Evan's post Ben Deilly tunes, other than the radio hits. Fact of the matter is, the more poppy, Graham Parsons meets Big Star Rock was far closer to Evan's vision, more authentic, and better music.
Ben Deilly was the better songwriter (opinion) and Lemonheads went downhill after the split (fact). He wrote Postcard which holds its own against Ride With Me (a great song, don't get me wrong) and shows the latter was no great departure in sound - they just turned down the fuzz occasionally as do many power pop bands (eg Good Riddance - Green Day). Has anyone posted the studio acoustic version of Ride With Me that was on the B-side of the Favourite Spanish Dishes EP - not the Lovey one?
Actually it was a turning point...it was an evolution from the shared singer/lead combo of Evan and Drummer Ben Deily and the "post punk" sound they were trying to achieve. After Evan took his place as the "lead" of the band they finally developed a unique sound. I absolutely love this Lemonheads song.
