BEST OF SHOW

In November of 2000, two of the founding members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and some of their friends got together on the stage at the historic Fox Theater in Hanford, California to record this ground breaking DVD-Audio/Video disc. With only unamplified acoustic instruments in hand and their voices to support themselves, they sat in a circle, played bluegrass music and traditional folk tunes all day for cameras and high-resolution recording equipment. The MLP 5.1 channel surround mix immerses the listener in the sound of mandolin, guitar, fiddle, banjo and harmonizing vocals. Listeners can select an "audience", "stage" or "stereo" mix while viewing multiple camera angle video. Instrumentals and lots of singing were the order of the day, capped by two songs by master songwriter and singer Jennifer Warnes!.

About the Recording Approach:

This recording is NOT an attempt to "document" a live recording of John McEuen and friends, but instead an exploration of high-resolution recording coupled with alternative ways of presenting 5.1 channel surround mixes. While both an "audience" and "stage" mix are included on the disc on the DVD-Video side, it is the DVD-Audio 96 kHz/24 bit tracks encoded with Meridian Lossless Packing [MLP] that elevates the listening experience well beyond a traditional CD or even a live event. You are placed in the middle of ensemble and hear the sound of the instruments coming from all directions. The dynamic range and fidelity offered by the 96 kHz/24 Bit source recording makes this recording come to life.

About the Disc:

This DVD disc has two sides with digital data on them. One side, the DVD-Video side, contains the complete performances with multiple camera angle video, alternate mixes ["stage" and "audience"], DTS and Dolby Digital audio tracks and a comprehensive array of informational screens about the project and the performers. There are photos from the sessions and complete technical information about the recording. The other side is formated as a DVD-Audio disc complete with the MLP encoded 96 kHz/24 bit "stage" mix and a stereo PCM 96 kHz/24 bit mix compatible with all DVD players.
