Thank you for taking the time to listen to The Hero, a tribute to the bond between a soldier and his mom.

My family has worked with wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans for years. During this period of time we have become extremely close with families of our wounded and have witnessed moments of personal anguish hidden from the world. As we view our soldiers as heroes, it's the mothers of these troops often overlooked for their relentless dedication to their wounded sons and daughters who fight for our freedom and have sacrificed their 'normal' for us. I began writing this song a year ago but was inspired to complete it this Fall as I sat with one of our troops and his mother and was hit with the realization that these incredible women, these mothers of the wounded, are too often left unrecognized.
My family founded the Iraq Star Foundation, providing free reconstructive surgery to our troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
One of our Iraq Star troops was disfigured Iraq veteran Sgt. Scott Stephenson. He and his mother Luana Schneider launched Tempered Steel, in an effort to unite the public with wounded and disfigured soldiers through dialogue as the wounded troops visit and speak to schools and organizations across the country.
It is women like Luana who are The Hero.
