Gilded Serpent presents...Courtesy of Amina & the Aswan Dancers...
Another valuable glipse fromthe documentary HIZZ-YA-WIZZ. In this episode we find Amina in 1983
dancing "Shaabi" style to a song by Ahmed Adaweya called "Sultan Sultan," performed by
George Dubai, Susu, Mohammed Amin, and Daria, at the Ramalla Club in San Francisco.
Shaabi means "of the common people." This clip is an illustration for Amina's article on
www.gildedserpent.com on the subject of Shaabi music, dance and Ahmed Adaweya.

  • This is a specifice style of dance and its supposed to be just a bit trashy. Its a character dance and that is the character she is playing.

    Thanks,

    Lynette

  • There is so much more to this dance that is not known by the younger dance generation. Dancers like Amina are few and far between. With the huge influx of new dance teachers, the cultural aspect that is taught by our generation is almost but lost. Well done, Amina.

  • I really like this, and I think the skirt is great for this dance!

  • Not hating or anything, but I think it looks sort of trashy when women belly dance in short skirts. It just doesn't look right. Like certain movements should be hidden.
