Our son Shalom transferred to a new army base in the Jordan Valley this week. After dropping him off, I passed by Kibbutz Degania Aleph (the first Kibbutz in Israel founded 100 years ago) on my way home and had a flashback to Yom HaZikaron (Israel Memorial Day). We attended the moving ceremony this year at the Degania cemetary.

It was a relatively small affair and almost all the attendees were parents, siblings or children of soldiers who died serving their country. Since Shalom's base in the Jordan Valley was very close by, his unit served as the honor guard at the ceremony.

Here's an intimate look at a part of Israeli culture that the average tourist never gets to see...
