English Translation by Ramesh Krishnakumar, to the soul- stirring rendering by Karunamayi Amma.

The Mrityunjaya Mantra literally translated means Victory over Death or immortality. This mantra addressing Lord Shiva is written in the Rig Veda (7 mandala 59 Chapter) as well as the Yajur Veda (3-60) depicting it is a Sruti received ( that which was heard direct ) by Maharishi Vasistha, the Kula Guru of Sri Rama. Hence it is considered to be very sacred.

The sounds of this mantra connect you to your inner being. Listening and chanting it with deep understanding will give you the meaning of life, its bondage shows the path to liberation through overcoming fear of death.

Other names of this mantra Mahamrityunjay Mantra, Rudra Mantra, Tryambakam Mantra or Maha Sanjivini Mantra

The Sri Mrityunjaya Mantra can be chanted by anybody. It is important to understands its meaning, the vibrations it transmits touches the core of one's being.

  • The translation for Urva arukam iva bandhanaan is also given as ..cucumber bonded to its stalk

I do not find this translation appropriate with the rest of the mantra.

I have translated it as .against my bondage to diseases (and ignorance)..

The rationale is that Aruka in Sanskrit is disease and Urva means large .. translated as ..against my bondage to many diseases (and ignorance)..

    I have dropped the many

  • Dear Ramesh ~ Amma does say "Don't try and put Sanskrit into english... each Sanskrit word has atleast seven meanings". The MANTRA matters, not the mind-meaning, yes ?

  • Yes in a way I agree. But to many it is difficult to just recite without any meaning...I am one of them... hence my explanation about cucumber and the alternative meaning. I am sure the Sages wrote all mantras with one meaning... but sanskrit is easy to intrepret in English . In a few days I will have the Vishnu Sahasramanam up as I did for Rudram. I guess we must understand the core essence to link the emotion to the vibration.

    Thanks for the input

    Ramesh Krishnakumar
