This was Zip's very first time to show over fences! It was a Novice Amateur Hunter Hack class at an AQHA show on 8/17/08. He is extremely green over fences although he has been showing all-around at AQHA and open shows all year and has done very well. He is a 2003 gelding. I was very pleased with his performance in this class. I realize it wasn't perfect, but it was his first time out and I just wanted it to be a good experience. I am aware that he didn't do a full flying change after the second fence, but until the day before this show, he had never done any sort of flying change from the left to right lead (we just started schooling lead changes recently and he still couldn't do it in that direction). The day before, he started doing them, so I asked for it and was happy that he tried, even if it wasn't perfect.

  • what place did u get

  • 3rd of 3 - he was a much better mover and probably jumper than one of the other horses (I didn't really see the other one), but he missed that lead change which was a big penalty. Almost 2 years later now and we haven't shown over fences again...ha!

  • @jumpthemoon15 fyi he looked awsome to me

  • Thanks :). I was proud of him. He's a better mover now than he was then, but we've barely done any jumping so I don't know if he could still do it or not! Maybe this summer we'll get back into it.

  • Very nice :) Needs more of a canter, though, a little pokey :)

  • Thank you :). Yes, he's also a WP horse, so we occasionally have trouble figuring out whether we should be loping or cantering :).

  • @jumpthemoon15 great job!!!! u and him look like an awsome pair

  • Nice job! Good riding! Adorable horse! LOL!

  • you did great! i rode a qh that had some hock problems and NEVER could lead change. i learned to get the lead over fences and it worked 99% of the time. he was such a good guy and so honest that it would have been stupid to put him aside.

your guy looks like he has the same temperment! keep it up! if you have problem with changes in the future try over the last fence in a line to put more weight in your outside stirrup over the fence - this will make them land on the right lead.

  • I love the distances you two got. Don't feel bad about the lead. I have a 2002 gelding I'm teaching lead changes, and the same thing happens at the shows and at home for that matter xD. It'll come and you guys'll probably knock the others out of the park if you get a round like that :]
