A grand jury returned an indictment charging James McNair and Kim DiPrima with second-degree manslaughter, the Staten Island Advance reported. Neighbors say the two pit bulls ran wild and terrorized the neighborhood for months before setting upon Piotrowski. The victim was so badly injured that doctors amputated one leg and would have taken another if they thought the nonagenarian could have tolerated it. Piotrowski had been in Richmond University Medical Center's intensive care unit for six weeks when he died Aug. 17. Piotrowski was affectionately known as "Hank the Tank" because of his self-sufficiency. Henry Piotrowski, a neighbor on Staten Island, was mauled by the dogs July 1. He died Aug. 17 after weeks in an induced coma.

At 90 years old, a Staten Island man has lived through a lot in his life. But he probably never expected to be fighting for his own -- after being mauled by pit bulls. The man is in such bad shape, he doesn't know the owner was just arrested.
On Tuesday night, the dogs' owner was being held at the 120th Precinct stationhouse charged with not having his pit bulls on a leash or collared with tags.
Popeye and Brutus are the two pit bulls who witnesses say mauled 90-year-old Henry Piotrowski so badly the elderly victim had to have one leg amputated at the knee and is at risk of losing an arm.
"The man looked up at me and asked me to help," witness Stephanie Morton said through tears.
Piotrowski was outside his Port Richmond home when neighbor Reginald Bell said he heard Piotrowski's cries for help and saw the two dogs attacking him. Bell grabbed a butcher knife to chase the dogs away.
"I've seen some horrific things in my life but that was far beyond anything I could have ever imagined," Bell said.
The dogs have been euthanized. Neighbors say the canine couple had terrorized their neighborhood since spring. The owners' 11 year-old-son, whom we're not identifying, said his dogs were not violent and must have been provoked.
"Brutus when he came home he had a scratch on his face and he was bleeding. The guy must have hit him or something cause my dogs don't attack for nothing," the boy said.
The dog's owner is being held overnight while the district attorney continues to investigate and consider additional charges.
Piotrowski remains hospitalized in critical condition.
