This is one of my few political based songs. This was inspired by a quote I read in the book "Hippie" by Barry Miles. It is a quote spoken by Ed Sanders in the 1960's band The Fugs. He says,

"We rented a flat-bed truck and a sound system and we chanted 'demons out'. It's on the Tederness Junction album. The idea was for a formal exorcism that would exorcise the evil spirits from the Pentagon. It didn't work because the war went on for another seven years. We hoped it would work but we weren't prepared to crawl under it if it levitated."

This quote affects me very strongly because I recognize the eccentric thoughts and actions of the 1960's. In this song I ask "Is there a will TODAY to change the way?" I feel that as crazy as it may seem to try and leviate the Pentagon, I still give props to the Fugs for their bravery and their will to do something dramatic for the art scene. I would love to see more of that kind of behavior today.

The Fugs Tribute

Everyone opened Pandora's box
Feel your innocence escaping through the locks
We rented out a flat-bed truck
and thought it'd take a little luck
but it didn't work
'cuz the war went on for seven more years
and it's never worked
'cuz the war's been on for seventy years

Chanting well with brass and bell
to keep this country from going to hell
let the love levitate this time
and we're feeling fine

We chanted the words to filter the system
Priapus reigns over us
We clipped a few wires and we welded the wisdom
Priapus is going insane
with an image of death in his brain
white hair, white lies
no weapons in the skies
only weapons in disguise

chanting well with brass and bell
to keep this country from going to hell
let the love levitate this time
and we're feeling fine

where there's a will
there's a way
is there a will today to change the way?

and we rented out a flat-bed truck
and thought it'd take a little luck
but it didn't work
'cuz the war went on for seven more years
and it's never worked
'cuz the war's been on for seventy years

  • Hi Madeline, This is Coby Batty the Fugs...Thank you so much for writing and posting your very good song. I can speak for Ed as well, and I know he would whole-heartedly approve! Well, conceived, well-written and a very nice performance. We've a new record coming out and I'd like to send you a copy. It's called Be Free. I'll check this post soon and we can figure out how I can get a copy to you. Meanwhile, Be Free and Remember - Love to Power To Peace!!!...your supporter, Coby

  • Hey Coby! Enchanting to meet you. I really enjoy your Nothin song, it's definitely somethin. I dug the line "Buddah Nada". Thank you for listening and being a supporter. I would LOVE a copy of Be Free. And I would be more than happy to send you a copy of my personal record when I am finished recording here at school. Thanks again for listening and keep writing! You're awesome. Love, Madeline Spooner

  • Great song! Have you ever performed this in public?

  • actually, yes at an open mic...and it was horrible. I got nervous and I couldn't hear myself at all - so I basically just said "okay, I forgot all the rest of my chords..NEXT!" hahah

  • I first became aware of the Fugs when my older brother brought home one of their records, around 1967. I think it was that summer or the one after (?) that I saw the Fugs at the Fillmore east during the WBAI Radio Community Breast event.

The Fugs will live through their music for a very long time.

Their music and poetry may even outlast *nothing*.

    And Madeline is great too!

    Very nice.

  • @MadSpoon23 ♥

  • Thank you

  • Damn.

  • Just what we need, another jealous misogynist.

  • Hey you gave it your best shot! That's what matters!
