This is one of my few political based songs. This was inspired by a quote I read in the book "Hippie" by Barry Miles. It is a quote spoken by Ed Sanders in the 1960's band The Fugs. He says,
"We rented a flat-bed truck and a sound system and we chanted 'demons out'. It's on the Tederness Junction album. The idea was for a formal exorcism that would exorcise the evil spirits from the Pentagon. It didn't work because the war went on for another seven years. We hoped it would work but we weren't prepared to crawl under it if it levitated."
This quote affects me very strongly because I recognize the eccentric thoughts and actions of the 1960's. In this song I ask "Is there a will TODAY to change the way?" I feel that as crazy as it may seem to try and leviate the Pentagon, I still give props to the Fugs for their bravery and their will to do something dramatic for the art scene. I would love to see more of that kind of behavior today.
The Fugs Tribute
Everyone opened Pandora's box
Feel your innocence escaping through the locks
We rented out a flat-bed truck
and thought it'd take a little luck
but it didn't work
'cuz the war went on for seven more years
and it's never worked
'cuz the war's been on for seventy years
Chanting well with brass and bell
to keep this country from going to hell
let the love levitate this time
and we're feeling fine
We chanted the words to filter the system
Priapus reigns over us
We clipped a few wires and we welded the wisdom
Priapus is going insane
with an image of death in his brain
white hair, white lies
no weapons in the skies
only weapons in disguise
chanting well with brass and bell
to keep this country from going to hell
let the love levitate this time
and we're feeling fine
where there's a will
there's a way
is there a will today to change the way?
and we rented out a flat-bed truck
and thought it'd take a little luck
but it didn't work
'cuz the war went on for seven more years
and it's never worked
'cuz the war's been on for seventy years

actually, yes at an open mic...and it was horrible. I got nervous and I couldn't hear myself at all - so I basically just said "okay, I forgot all the rest of my chords..NEXT!" hahah
