i picked up this yo-yo today (one of the oldest in my collection) and decided to take it around with me. it's national yo-yo day, and don duncan's birthday (or so it's said), so even though it's one of my prized 'collector's items' and a gift from my dad, i thought it'd be a small-but-fitting bow to yo-yoing's history... which has given me so much.
outside my daughter's tkd class, i decided to hit kwyjibo on it, which i ended up doing first try, no sweat. i was pretty surprised because of how ancient it is. anyway, i got it on video: http://viddy.it/ldZP9I
my good friend sonny saw it, and he light-heartedly challenged me to let him know when i hit spirit bomb on it. i don't know what's wrong with me regarding spirit bomb. i mean... i love the trick, but i just seem to have to do it on everything. i think it's kind of a perfect 'challenge trick', because it requires a good throw, accuracy, and management of response. i've done it on no jives, loopers, butterflys... but as soon i read that challenge from sonny, i knew this little guy was next.
it didn't take me long, but it was cool because i kind of had to go into another gear with it. i set it down a few times, literally saying 'impossible'... but really, in yo-yoing and in every aspect of life, that mentality is your only limitation.
i was sitting on the couch and i thought of a conversation with my friends about how IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT YOU'RE THROWING. if you're any kind of yo-yoer at all... if you're any kind of person at all... you can make it work. you can find the way through.
i got up and i hit it. it didn't mean anything to humanity. it didn't help anybody or alleviate any of the problems our world faces. but man... it meant a lot to me. it's just a little yo-yo trick, but to me it was pulling into outer pipeline or fighting some badass spanish bull or figuring out gravitation's effect upon special relativity. i think we all have moments we grapple with; some epic and some more subtle and humble. some people find them while battling cathartically with a grizzly bear and some people find them in figuring out how in the hell they're going to land a yo-yo trick. it was small, but it was big for me.
right after i hit it, i was basically thinking 'thanks'. i realize it was not to don duncan or to anyone in particular, and not even for that one throw... but for (and TO) every throw: good and awful. all the knucklewhacks and knots and late-misses that brought me to here & now. i feel privileged to OWE yo-yoing as much as i do.
happy yo-yo day. 'thanks'.
I applauded in my room (:
