THere's nothing to be surprised. Catalans are Spanish. There's only a minority in catalonia who hates spain, but the majority feels spain as their country, as everywhere in spain.

Catalonia is Spain, Spain cannot be without Catalonia.

Mira Aemilia, me pareces un poquito tocapelotas. Esta celebración ha demostrado que la mayoría de los españoles SÍ tenemos un fuerte sentimiento nacional, pero algunas personas, no sé con que clase de intenciones, supongo que algunos de ellos por ignorancia, tienen una idea de España a este respecto bastante equivocada, como esas estupideces de la prensa inglesa hablando de balcanización de España y otras imbecilidades.

There actually aren't very many Catalans in Catalunya anymore. Barcelona in particular experienced a lot of internal migration from Andalusia, where people don't have much of a problem with Spain. Also, in recent times, non-Europeans have immigrated and they obviously haven't inherited the grudge either.
