This hummingbird came into our house and was pretty tired by the time we got her outside. So we gave her a little sugar water from the feeder to perk her up. Looks like she'll be ok.

  • @YourFan: if the bird has a broken wing, I'm not sure there's much you can do. Hummingbirds need to eat every few hours. The "nectar" is one part sugar to four parts water. Bring it to a boil to dissolve the sugar and then LET IT COOL!!!

  • Thank you so much for the info.I'm so looking forward to the summer when I can use a new feeder. I'm so excited, I love Hummingbirds, they are new to me, there has never been any in my area until last summer. I will take all the info I can gather to give these sweet little birds a comfortable place to come to....they make me smile, alot :) I did fill it too much come to think.... thanks again

Sounds like the feeder might be too full. Reduce the level of syrup and make sure there is no residue on the surface of the feeder. That should put it out of reach of the yellow jackets and, in frustration, they may fly off and commit hari kari (sepuku).

  • You probably saved its life. During migration hummers sometimes fly until they burn up all carbos and body fat. If that happens, they are so tired they cannot eat and will die. Only a small percentage actually survive annual migrations. People have reported seeing them fall from the sky during these times. On one occasion, I was lucky enough to rescue one that had run out of energy by feeding it sugar water from a tea spoon. What a wonderful feeling, knowing I had helped save something so small.

  • When a hummer comes inside...just grab a branch from outside quickly....the hummingbird recognizes it and lands. Then you carry the stick outside, bird and all. It only takes a minute or so and the bird doesn't waste energy flying around looking for a way out.

  • Aww...cute.

  • Cool! I have done this a few times. Where I work they sometimes get trapped in a part of the building and can't feed. Hummers will die in a matter of two hours without calories. Its so satisfying to save a life.God Bless and keep up the good work! = )

  • God bless your heart. You truly are special for helping a little bird .
