well - we made it work, but it was not pretty. Note the "lashing" on the foredeck.

  • With one single gust, that pole will bend like a dog's hind leg.

  • Yeah, definitely don't try that on the SF Bay. Someone would probably get impaled when that thing snaps.

  • Where I sail that would last about 5 minutes. The yoke on the downhaul attaches to the outside jaws of the pole to provide a counterbalance to the upward force of the chute. The lashing is so far inboard any meaningful wind speed is going to bend the pole. Definitely do not try this in Corpus Christi, TX! (or San Francisco for that matter0
