  • Sorry I don;t know what the costume would be called. The tunics that the men are wearing look very similar to the Tibetan 'chupa'. I only remember one dance being mentioned as specific to an occasion, and that was when the men were racing around with jugs of wine on their heads! Otherwise I only remember being told that the costumes and dances were from different parts of Ladakh, or were performed by different cultural groups. Sorry I can't help! :o(

  • Good question! Studies of ethnicity and culture show 'traditions' often aren't traditional at all, and are only recently created. What is aimed at tourists is often adapted & modified, - one theorist came up with the phrase 'cultural mummification' where something is preserved as traditional, just because it is presented & repeated for tourists. So while this performance may have roots in Ladakhi song and dance - and may even be traditional - I wouldn't count on it until I saw the evidence :o)
