Project for Motion Media Design Techniques II, animating vector shapes.
This was visual music experiment that primarily used the audio's levels as variables in expressions for the graphics. By using the Trapcode Sound Keys plug-in I separated the song into its different tracks. The audio manipulates different properties including position and rotation.
This project was heavily influenced by the early computer graphic work of John and James Whitney. Their imagery was created from geometry and algebraic equations. Their films are influenced by Eastern cultures, so I chose a soundtrack that reflects this.
The Whitney Brothers used a mechanical computer to punch out holes on cards which they combined through the use of an optical printer. I stayed true to this style by composing my video with only circles and using and additive blending mode. Each little circle is an individual layer.
I only had three weeks to complete this project, and most of that time was taken up by waiting for the thousands of layers to be previewed. This is only an experiment that I wish I had time to refine, but I am currently re-purposing the video as raw footage for a personal project.
beautiful, congrats.
