I remember Satanic panic differently. I was going to a fundy Christian school and they were telling parents about watching out for everything from rock music to the Smurfs and Count Chocula. There were demonic powers in them or something. ?? They talked about Satanists in black limosines picking up blonde, blue-eyed children out of their yards and sacrificing them. ?? It was so out there it's funny now, but at the time, the paranoia was palpable. I like the music theory you go into here.

also, Pagans and wiccans and other witches are still being tormented and oppressed today

theres even been protests against JK Rowling, a christian author, who has been accussed of being a Satanist just for writing books about wizards and witches being protrayed as heroes I.E. Harry Potter

in my personal view, satanic panic neither end nor began with the 80s

it began years ago when many pagans and wiccans are persecuted, tortured and often murdered by so called christians

alot of people who were christians are falsely accused for being witches and met the same fate

anyone that looked or sounded weird or new was considered to be witchcraft by the puritans and the church

after the 80s, the satanic panic era cooled down a bit but it still goes on to this day

Right now there is an innocent man on death row due to "Satanic Panic".

Search Youtube for "West Memphis Three". The WM3 were three teens convicted of the murder of 3 young boys in 1994. There was no physical evidence presented at trial. However, there were heavy metal music, black clothing, and Stephen King books presented as "proof" of devil worship. The jury found them guilty, without any evidence. 2 of the teens got life in jail, the other recieved the death sentence.

We had a woman that brought in to speak to our Sunday School class (circa 1991-1992).  The woman claimed to have been abused in a Satanic cult run by her parents, and that she was raped and made to give birth to babies so that they could sacrifice them.

Of course looking back the woman was more than likley mentally ill.
