State and local officials gathered in Tuscumbia on Aug. 16, 2010, to celebrate the grand opening of the new Osage River Bridge. The project was the first to start construction minutes after President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. While funding of the project did receive some criticism, local officials said the bridge is an important thoroughfare in the community with thousands of vehicles traveling on it each day carrying: children on their way to school, patients on their way to the hospital, employees on their way to work, soldiers on their way to Fort Leonard Wood, tourists on their way to Lake of the Ozarks and semis hauling goods and produce. The old bridge, which was built in the 1930s, received a poor-to-satisfactory rating several years ago by transportation officials.
I was there! I was in the Eldon High School band. :)
