you know, in all honesty, a "more humane" way to do it, even though it doesn't sound like it is not letting the animal suffer but pull it up on the boat immediately and use a chainsaw (or some other cutting equipment) to sever the spine. Instead of waiting forever for it to die before pulling it up on the boat.
The real issue as well on this is that in some places without whale meat and blubber, some people would end up dying on top of it.
