All too often schools simply present disciplinary content as facts to be memorized rather than as meaningful tools to solve important problems in the world. So, for example, it is one thing to learn about erosion or algae blooms as dictionary definitions to be memorized for a test. It is quite another to learn them as tools for making sense of an evolving storyline related to a water quality problem and to understand that these are tools for understanding and explaining why fish might be dying in a park. However, it is difficult to provide students with narrative problems in which disciplinary content has value in the context of schools. QA successfully establishes such contexts within the virtual gaming environment. It is the potential of Quest Atlantis to immerse students within virtual worlds in which they have an important role that makes games in general and Quest Atlantis in particular such a powerful tool for educators.
