This is a very simple modification of the (open-source) Project 1.4 emulator. It replaces some of the sounds and music of Mario 64 with external .wav/.mid files by trapping a few sound-related functions in the game.

Getting a proper balance using this primitive method is pretty much impossible. I normalized the wave files, but doing the same to MIDI files isn't that easy, so I ended having to change volumes manually at some points.

Don't take this seriously, overall I'm all against emulator-based modifications (such as high-res textures), but this just seemed like a fun idea. There are many problems with my approach, so don't expect me to develop this further since a proper replacement wouldn't be possible with this simplistic method. I just replaced a few sounds because it takes a while to track down a specific SFX (the debugger on the left was done partly to help me on this, it filter sounds that have been played for the first time).

Project 64 is running on interpreter mode and my CPU is very old, hence why it's so slow.

You can try it if you want (CPU must run on interpreter mode):

  • HOLY SHIT FINALLY yay

  • @donaldthescotishtwin As I've said in the description, nothing much except a few tricks can be one using this kind of hack. It's not any kind of solution for SFX replacement.

  • So for now you can only Set MIDI music into the game? Oh well. Still You just made an new point. First importing music However with hearing SM64 sounds now MIDI musics. Your each video reaches top and top and top :3

  • @Walktrougher This was just a cheap 30-min hack, importing music to the native format of the game, with its limitations, is the way to go as far as hacking concerned.

  • Ahahaha, SMB1 sounds, epic win.

I'd be annoyed to see a hack that *requires* this... but it's a really neat enhancement, just like you add new textures to an existing game.

  • I really want to replace Ocarina of Time's music with what ZREO recently came out with. They've seriously recreated the entire soundtrack, including all the jingles.

  • the wav files work but i hear no music (midi)

  • i downloaded sm64 kirby editon but it wont work D: plz help

  • Does this work for PJ64 1.6, and is there something like this for Star Fox 64?

  • @BeanManIncorporated Okay. :D That means I like SMB3!
