RUBINSTEIN answers who is best pianist !

"Rubinstein at 90" is an interview at Rubinstein's home in Paris, on the Avenue Foch. Robert MacNeil queries him on his "prodigious appetite for life," and Rubinstein replies by talking about his failing eyesight--which has now opened his ears and made time to listen to Mahler, singers, violinists, pianists, everything. His motto since youth is the Polish equivalent of "I will not give in!" A failed suicide attempt at age 20 in Berlin gave Rubinstein a new life, a new appreciation of the joy and vitality of life. When MacNeil tries to characterize Rubinstein as "the best" pianist of his time, Rubinstein scoffs. "Nothing in Art can be 'the best.' It can only be different--itself. Each artist is a world, a universe unto himself." We see Rubinstein with Andre Previn and the London Symphony, performing an excerpt from the Grieg Concerto, which Rachmaninov called the most perfect concerto. Later, Rubinstein celebrates his own "warhorse," the G Minor Concerto of Saint-Saens, which Ravel admired enough to imitate its orchestration.

  • That interview brings back many old memories.

I interviewed Rubinstein in the same "hôtel particulier" Avenue Foch in Paris in 1962. I was nineteen years old and it was the beginning of a true friendship.

  • Pleas can you tell us more about that !

  • Pianists should never be allowed to talk.

  • @TexasWorldMusic he erased his account.

  • @klingsor93 - I would love to hear more about your experience.

  • Great Interview. Robert MacNeil has a great gig..

  • @ClassicalMusicPL

Aha, i see...well in this case its very cool for him to be a proud jew.

  • Lovely personality, although i wish he was an Atheist instead of a proud jew. I have nothing against jews, i just wish the whole world was atheist!

  • i followed him everywhere in the 60s and saw all his concerts in england at the time. He even used to give concerts in cinemas and grammar school halls for the toc h music club. They put a piano on the stage in the Hendon cinema and he came one saturday night to perform and I even saw him give a full concert at haberdashers school hall !!

  • Rubinstein is certainly one of my most favorite interpreters of Romantic Music (namely Chopin). He just has that "magic touch", if you will. I also find it very interesting that he was friends with Pablo Picasso!

  • "Wasted" my entire youth being a Rubinstein groupie, mainly in Chicago, but also NY, Philadelphia. Time well "wasted". Heard him in Philadelphia in 75 or 76 when he was already blind, playing one Beethoven concerto and the Brahms 1st in a single performance. Had to be gently guided to the piano with help of the first violin section - but amazing! He can say what he wants, but the sound he produced was unequalled. Every time I heard him live I thought - however could I forget that sound?

  • What a fascinating man! Not only was he a stupendous pianist, he also knew how to live life to the full - and for 95 years! Besides music he loved art, theatre, travelling, books, good food, cigars... and women.
