  • Every thing I have read states not to let your pup catch a live bird, yet you are allowing that to happen. Why is that?

It seems that would only teach the dog to chase and not hold its point. Could you please clarify.

  • Very good point... We are training an English Springer Spaniel in this session - which are flushing dogs. Hence the reason we want to build a strong flush.

  • Am I the only one who things this kind of stuff is really disturbing? I train my cocker spaniel on field work, nothing professional. I use birds wings, a rabbit dummy, nothing wrong with that. But seeing him wag that living bird around, putting it in his pocket like it is an ordinary canvas dummy, really pisses me of.

Maybe you could respect the bird just a little bit more. It is not an object.

  • @SeckSeySam Haha i was cracking up. what a cocky mother f'er

  • awesome

  • @sietskevoorhout totally agree with you.

  • Im sorry but my father has been training gun dogs for many years and he has NEVER needed to use live birds to do so...so why do you feel the need to do so? your lack of respect for the bird is disturbing..

  • can you teach a older ( 2 years) dog that hasn't hunted yet to be productive

  • did he just stuff that pigeon in his pocket? lmao

  • everyone has their own methods when training gun dogs. I have a 4 month old Irish setter he finds and points quails I just let his genetics kick in never used clipped birds for him. but I have used clipped wings on a Lab in the past so I guess every dog needs a different method

  • I don't think this is typically American. You should search for some books. I don't know any English books, I just read the Dutch ones. But I'm sure there are plenty. Or search further for videos on youtube, there are a couple of good ones!

  • totaly agree its quite disturbing first ive seen a trainer use a live bird though, is this american? Just got a cocker spaniel hes 11 weeks old now got any tips for training?
